Daniel is a busy, out-going 13 year old boy. He enjoys hanging out with his friends, playing video games, watching sci-fi (especially Doctor Who and Torchwood) and generally keeping everyone laughing with his kooky sense of humour. On Tuesday, March 28 his world turned upside down when he was struck by a car walking home from school in Brockville, Ontario. Paramedics rushed him to Brockville General Hospital where he was stabilized and immediately transferred to Kingston General Hospital.
Daniel suffered a transverse fraction of the right upper arm, which required surgery and a plate, as well as a linear basal skull fracture and concussion. He remains in hospital recovering as of April 4.
Unfortunately, due to a complicated immigration situation, neither Mom (who immigrated to Canada in 1980) or Daniel (who was born in England but came to Canada in 2010) are covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). His medical expenses to date are in excess of $30,000 and growing by leaps every day. When he is discharged (which we hope will be within a day or two!) he will need physiotherapy, trauma counselling (what a scary experience!), as well as months of follow-up consultations, all out of pocket.
Additionally, his mom, Nikki, is a single-mom and self-employed contract worker. Each day she has spent at his bedside has been lost income into their already stretched budget. Daniel also needs to replace his glasses which were broken in the accident, and his precious cell phone (which would hugely help him to stay connected with his friends while recovering - but also will be essential in allowing him to regain his confidence to go out again when he's ready, knowing Mom is just a text or call away).
The staff at KGH, friends and family have been huge in helping Daniel recover physically and emotionally. Your kind donations will ensure that he can continue with the necessary treatments and that financial hardship doesn't become a road block to him just being a teenager again!
Many thanks
