Treatment for Lyme Disease

Donation protected
34 years ago I was bitten by a tick. I didn't know it at the time but discovered so 16 years later when I was diagnosed with Lyme disease.

It was a few months after the bite that the symptoms which I became all too familiar with started to develop. I may have been sick in the intervening period without thinking anything of it. A winter cold perhaps. But the characteristic of the Lyme fatigue was altogether different. I recognised this and went to my doctor, who referred me to a specialist. Nothing was found. As far as my doctor was concerned there was no more he could do.

So began my long battle with this horrible illness. It is a battle that has involved many doctors, hospitals and specialists, a lot of money and a lot of dead ends. When I was finally diagnosed in 2005 I thought it was the beginning of the end. It gave me a label for what I was feeling and brought hope. More doctors, more hospitals and more specialists followed, with various extended periods of treatment. Nothing worked. I have now been diagnosed longer than I was undiagnosed and the disease has only gotten worse.

My symptoms are constant fatigue and nerve pain. On an intensity scale of 1 to 10, it would rove between 3 and 9 but never go away. Its progression has been slow and steady. In the early years, it was primarily fatigue and I could manage it. I was able to have the semblance of a normal life without ever fully embracing it, although many times I pushed myself when I shouldn't have and regretted it afterwards. I still do. However, as the disease has progressed my ability to cope has receded alongside my quality of life. I am now no longer able to work. And still it gets worse.

Which finally brings me to my GoFundMe request. There is a treatment in Germany which has the possibility of making a difference for me. It is expensive of course. The treatment takes place in the St. George Hospital and involves raising the body temperature before administering the antibiotics. The theory behind it is that the antibiotics are more effective at higher temperatures. I recently spoke to someone for whom the treatment worked.

It goes without saying of course that any amount given would be deeply appreciated. It might be life-changing and it might not be. But there is still the hope.

What is Lyme - The Lyme Species
Quite a few species have been identified so far, with the most common types in America. The B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, in Europe theB. b. sensu stricto,B. b. afzelii, B. b. garinii, B. bavariensis. In Australia, according to theAustralian Chronic Infectious Disease.Society Limited,B. afzeli, B. garinii, B. valaisiana and b. bavariensiscan be found.
Following a bite of an infected tick, the saliva and thus the Borrelia burgdorferi goesinto the skin and/or the blood. The organisms are very agile andbegin to spread both locally and systemically.
Usually, several days elapse before the first signs of infection.I.e., erythema migrans(EM), other less typical rashes or flu-like symptoms occur. Due to its agility and phenotypic changes the Borrelia caneasily penetrate the cells and survive inside the long term. When it goesintracellular, the bacteria become resistant to antibiotics because most antibiotics do not go intracellular.
It builds biofilms and produces biotoxins. Thetoxins destroy tissues especially nerves & glands.
Chronic Lyme Diseaseis the most common form of borrelia infection.30-50 percent of untreated or conventionally treated patients develop a multi-symptom and multisystem disorder.
