Hello!
The AVID classes of Wallenberg High School are preparing for their first overnight college field trip in April. We will be taking about 35 high school students to UC Santa Cruz, Cal Poly, and UC Santa Barbara.
AVID is a program designed to help highly-motivated students go to college. The program specifically targets first generation, low-income, and underrepresented students who might not otherwise have access to college. This is Wallenberg's 5th year participating in AVID. In our 2 AVID classes, we focus on developing reading, writing and studying skills, leaderhip and organization, and preparing for SATs and college applications.
We have secured a grant to cover some of the costs but still need additional funding for transportation, hotel rooms, and food for the students.
This field trip is entirely a product of students' interest and initiative. For the past 5 years, students have been eager to visit schools that would be hard for them to travel to on their own. They are taking on much of the responsibility of planning and funding the trip.
The students are excited about the opportunity to experience what life on a college campus is like and to travel to new places outside of SF!
