Jannie Chan was a caring and loving individual. She's married to Mon Chan with 2 sons David Chan (Me) and Richard Chan (Older Brother). She would always put others first before herself. In the year 2010 cuts was made, at that time my father Mon Chan has lost all his benefits. Because of the cuts, both of them didn't have any Health Insurance coverage. When 2011 came, Jannie started to felt pain around her chest for a few month. She then later said and told us she think she needs a body scan, she can't handle the pain around the area any longer. Due to the cuts and not having Health Insurance she has missed her mammogram scan at 2010 and then later got one at 2011. When the results came in, we found out that she has Stage 3 Breast Cancer. Not only that, but the Cancer was aggressive and wanting to spread rapidly. Around late 2011 to early 2012 Jannie has gotten approval to Medi-Cal and she has gotten a Single Mastectomy on her right Breast. She also went through Chemotherapy and Radiation while also taking some Cancer Medications to stop it from coming back.
2 years later January of 2014 Jannie arthritis pain is slowly growing as the Doctors could only give more Medications for the pain. On March 2014 Jannie has lost her balance due to arthritis pain on her leg and she has fallen breaking her hip bone. She has gotten a Hip Surgery replacement on her right side (same side on the Breast Cancer). After going through several scans there was nothing found. Jannie was hospitalized for so long that she had her Birthday in the Hospital in April while going through rehab, she didn't get discharge till around May of 2014.
Around June of 2014 me and my brother Birthday was about to come up. But we ended up celebrating it at the Hospital. Jannie started to have back pain to the point she could barely move around. When she went in for more MRI and CAT Scans, the Doctor found out that the Cancer has came back. Not only did it came back, but it actually started to spread through out the body. From her bones to her hips which was why she was losing her balance beside from arthritis. We stay with our Mother caring for her and giving her strength. The Doctors came to us and told us that the Cancer has spread to her Brain to the point she was slowly losing her vision on her left eye. Before anything could happen, Jannie needed a Lower L1 Spine Surgery. The risk was her not being able to have the strength to walk again, but she will have lesser pain. Jannie had decided on her own will and proceed with the Spine Surgery. It went well but more Rehab was needed.
After going in and out of the Hospital in LAC+USC, to Rancho Los Robles Rehab Center, to Alhambra Hospital, to San Gabriel Hospital, and then back to Alhambra Hospital. About 7 times in and out, they offered us Hospice Care which we declined and wanted to seek for a Cure or Treatment. Then on the 8th time going back to the Hospital in Alhambra, they said if we do not accept the reality of her condition there is nothing we could do but run in circles. Richard and I then accepted Hospice care for Jannie. They've told us around May of 2014, that Jannie would only have about 6 months to a year if not less.
It's now November 7th 2014, Jannie has stop responding to anyone but just laying on bed. As Richard and I was trying to call her and wake her up. My aunt and uncles that was giving her care when we're at work was also trying to talk and wake her up. But nothing was working. The nurse that was taking care of Jannie under Hospice told us if she's not responding nor waking up and having seizures, then we should get ready for the worst. For people who doesn't eat or drink and having seizures could last a few hours to a few days. Richard and I had stayed with Jannie to her last breath. On November 8th 2014, around 12:05AM Jannie has stopped breathing. At 12:50AM she was pronounced deceased by the Hospice Nurse.
Jannie was fighting for her life since 2011 with the support of Mon, Richard, and David. But it got harder because my father Mon was also sick. Around late 2011 my father has been diagnosed with Irregular Heart Beats. January 2012 Mon has gotten a few Stent around his Heart for clogs, he was Hospitalized during his Birthday. Around early 2013 Mon was having a lot of chest pain to the point, the Doctors said he needed a Bypass Surgery. Mon has agreed to the Surgery it was a successful surgery as we celebrated as a family together. After a few months later on August 6th 2013, Mon has passed away from Heart Failure. We're devastated and lost.
What hurts even more was that Jannie couldn't Claim Mon's Widowed Benefit. Due to lack of Las Vegas Nevada Marriage Seal, the Social Security Office declined Jannie application. The Marriage Certificate was not registered or was not even recorded in their Books in Nevada. Not only that their Marriage Certificate Number was registered to another couple. Jannie was already devastated losing Mon, but not getting to claim the hard work Mon has done through out the years wasn't making anything better.
Mon has passed away August 6th 2013, Richard and David was scrambling around looking for Assistance Funds for an unexpected lost. Not only that we both took over the debts of Mon. Now Jannie has passed away November 8th 2014, we're both at the edge of looking around for any Assistance Funds for the Funeral and Debts. I though debts would go down in the years, but instead it's stacking higher.
It was a hard and harsh battle psychically and mentally for my Father and Mother. As they suffer pain from day to day, yet only medications are the only solutions that can be given to help them from anything besides from getting several surgeries. In the past 4-5 years was a harsh battle. My Father had heart problems due to over working and my Mother has cancer. They passed away by the same way which it was while sleeping. It maybe sad, but it's the best way for anyone to leave. It maybe a blessing or what not, but they'll be pain-free from any sickness or disease. As for the funds Richard and I are near the edge trying to find anything while taking over our Father & Mother's Debts. Other then that may both Mon (Father/Husband) and Jannie (Mother/Wife) Rest in Peace and may you both reunite together once again watching us Richard (Older Son/Brother) and David (Younger Son/Me) from up above. Both of you don't have to worry much about us, because we still have each other with the support of our relatives, friends, coworkers, and strangers. You'll forever be missed, but never forgotten. We love you forever & thank you for giving us and showing us life experience.
