The story of Baby Bear Gerard:

On the evening of August 17, 2014 my sister-in-law noticed that her unborn baby had stopped moving in her womb. She told my brother-in-law and they quickly went to the ER. Shortly after arrival the doctor determined that an emergency C-Section was needed for the baby to have any chance of survival because excess fluid had accumulated around the fetal compartment (Hydrops fetalis ). Before the surgery the doctors looked into the eyes of two terrified parents and told them that their baby may only live minutes after being born. He came into the world strong but there was something very wrong. His little heart was beating extremely fast and would then slow way down. For over a month the baby was in the ICU under constant survailence and monitoring with a continuous stream of medicine. His parents didn't live in the same town as the hospital where he was so they drove 45 miles everyday to see him for as long as the doctors would let them. During this time his mommy and daddy peered into an incubator never knowing how long they might have this little miracle in their lives. My brother-in-law named him Bear because he has more fight in him than a Grizzly. The doctors have determined that little Bear has Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome . This means that he has an abnormal extra electrical conduction pathway that is causing his heart to malfunction and missfire. The good and the bad news of this diagnosis is that there is an operation that can help repair the abnormality but, being premature, he isn't big enough to have the procedure yet. Although little Bear has gotten bigger and stronger he is nowhere near ready for the surgery. He has been able to go home but he has to take medicine to keep his heart episodes under control and has to be watched constantly. My sister-in-law has been unable to work and the medicine costs at least $300 per week. Baby Bear has to take it until he can have the surgery. He is litterally fighting for his life. My brother-in-law, a two time Iraq war veteran, is working as much as he can to support his wife, their first child and little baby Bear, while paying for his medication and hospital bills. I know that there are thousands of men, women and children that need help and I am simply asking everyone to think about little Bear and the sacrifices that his father made and give his son a chance at life. Every little bit helps and thank you for saving a small life!
