Most people who know us remember when Theo wandered into our lives back in 2012. He showed up in our yard off Killingsworth one day, and when Ana discovered the living conditions he had come from, she knew she couldn’t let him go back to that situation. What started as rescuing a dog in need quickly turned into something much bigger. Theo became Ana’s baby, and for the past 14 years he has been our loyal companion, our comfort, and a constant in our lives. Anyone who has met Theo knows how special he is.

Over the years, we’ve kept a close eye on a lump in his back leg and had it tested early on. At the time, we were told it wasn’t something that needed immediate intervention and to monitor it. Things have recently quickly changed. Doctors believe the lump is a Soft Tissue Sarcoma and X-Rays show that it has now calcified. It has grown so rapidly and so quickly causing Theo difficulties when walking. If left untreated, it could rupture and would force us into emergency surgery or worse, having to put Theo down. After evaluating all of our options, a specialist told us the best way to guarantee Theo a comfortable quality of life moving forward is to amputate the leg.

The hopeful part of this is that Theo is otherwise incredibly healthy for his age. His bloodwork is amazing, his cognitive health is strong, and he still has so much energy and life left in him. Our vet believes that removing the leg will give him the best chance at staying comfortable and continuing to enjoy the time he still has ahead. Dogs are incredibly resilient, and many adapt beautifully to life on three legs. We truly believe Theo deserves that chance.

The surgery will be costly, and asking for help doesn’t come easily to us. But Theo has given us 14 years of unconditional love, and we want to do everything we can to give him more time and keep him as comfortable as possible.
