For those of you who know me, know that mine and my families life lit up when my nephew baby Marcelo was born. It is an understatement when I say that he's one of the biggest joys in everyone's heart. He's one of the healthiest, happiest, most lively 7 month old baby I've ever encountered in my entire life. My brother and his girlfriend have done such a beautiful job as first time parents, and give nothing short of unconditional love to their baby boy. Amanda and my brothers life took a turn for worse a few days ago, their dog of over 7 years suddenly bit my nephews face. One of the most horrific situations any parent could ever think of has struck our family straight to the core of our hearts. A doctor at the San Francisco General hospital said it best fitting, that you could have a great pet for many years, but at the end of the day they're animals. What were dealing with at this point of this nightmare, is my nephew has been sedated with a breathing tube down his throat and what feels like 1000 IV's all throughout his little body. He has lacerations on each side of his face, a damaged tear duct, with the most severe damage to his nose which is almost fully gone on his right side. With this horrible painted picture, we were blessed enough that all this damage is what we would call superficial simply because none of the damage effected his growing brain or his ability to learn to talk and so forth. For the last couple days since the accident I could barely look at my nephew because I didn't see the happy baby I saw everyday. The struggles we as a family are soon to face are mainly that of one day he will ask why he looks different. As a baby this young, there's only so much the surgeons can offer him cosmetically because he still so much growing to do. As one could imagine seeing any baby in this condition is nothing less than heart breaking. No baby deserves what he's enduring and will continue to struggle with throughout the next few years of his life. The progress he has made in just these couple days is incredible. I never could imagine a baby fighting this hard to be a normal baby again. As hard as this is even writing and rehashing the accident, my family is counting our blessings in disguise. This whole situation could have been so much worse than what we're dealing with currently. He's alive and still able to continue grow and learn at the same pace as other babies his age. This is the most terrifying wake up call that any parent could face but if by our experiences we could prevent this from happening to another innocent child, we will tell our story a million times. Amanda's dog was loving, silly, and well behaved since he was a puppy. He had certifications of all kinds to prove so. The point of the matter is that at no expense ever should one have to deal with their infant baby in these conditions because they trusted their pet too much. All in all we are taking this day by day and seeing progress even if little. Our lives will never be the same, and my nephews life is forever altered as well. Thank you for your time and anything is greatly appreciated from the bottom of our hearts.
