Support John's Fight Against Cancer

Hello everyone - thank you for considering throwing your support behind a family in need. John is a coworker of mine and a good friend. For most of the year, he's been battling colon cancer which spread to his liver and his next treatment option will likely require travel out of state. This GoFundMe can help the family cover the extra costs incurred during travel and alleviate some financial stress while they deal with everything else. From John's Caring Bridge...

In late February (2024) John began treatment for colon cancer which had metastasized to his liver.

Treatment options have been limited and since that time he has received aggressive chemotherapy treatments every other week. We are thankful for the smart and compassionate doctors, nurses, and other professionals at Nebraska Cancer Specialists. As chemotherapy has only been successful to a certain extent, and the side effects of chemotherapy are compounding, we are pursuing a new and promising treatment called histotripsy. Unfortunately, this treatment is not available in Omaha yet so we have reached out to numerous treatment centers around the country in hopes one will work with us to have treatment there. In the meantime he continues a rigorous chemotherapy regimen.

For the past eight months we have tried to keep life as normal as possible for our three kids but that has proven difficult at times. John continues his work with the Omaha Fire Department in a light-duty capacity and Melanie continues her work with Millard Public Schools. We are a firefighter and an educator, we want to be the helpers, not the ones needing help. This diagnosis and treatment journey though has been humbling in so many ways, one of which is in helping us understand the generosity and kindness given so abundantly by others.

We are eternally thankful for the grace and support that has been shown to our family in a multitude of ways and by so many people on this journey.
