I've never been good at asking for help, but here it goes... Hi everyone! My name is H. I'm non-binary and my pronouns are they/them/their. For the first 33 years of my life, I lived as a female, which was my assigned gender at birth. Since I was about 5 years old, I always knew that something about that didn't feel right or authentic. It wasn't until I moved to Asheville, NC, and met others in this amazing queer community that I finally started to understand what made me different.
I began the process of transitioning my physical appearance to match my gender 4 years ago. I bought my first binder and can still remember the feeling when I wore it in public for the first time. I felt more right in my body than I had in 20 years. I also began taking testosterone 3 years ago. Each step has brought me closer to feeling complete in my body.
Although my binders have been a great accessory to help with my gender dysphoria, they are extremely uncomfortable and can be dangerous. I have to limit the amount of time that I wear one in a day and make sure to take adequate time off. I can't wear it while I'm exercising which makes going to the gym challenging and risky. In warmer weather, I have to watch that I don't overheat since the binders don't really breathe that well.
The worst, though, is when I'm traveling. Every time that I have to fly, my binder sets off the body scanner. This always results in a full pat-down of my chest. It's embarrassing and violating. Even when I explain to the agent why I wear a binder, it doesn't matter.
Here's where I need help. I have started saving for top surgery but on my own, it seems like forever away. I need help to pay for this surgery. With enough funds, I will be able to finally be complete in my body. I have already started the process of researching doctors in North Carolina, I just need help to move forward.
