Please help us raise money for a family undergoing a rough road ahead.
About a month and a half ago, Adam and Kayan Myers went in for a routine 20 week ultrasound, expecting to find out the gender of their little one. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful in finding out and a few days later, discovered much more than that. They were told that the ultrasound was showing some abnormalities in the baby's abdomen and heart. They were referred to Children's Mercy, Fetal Health Center in KC.
After several ultrasounds, echo cardiograms, and appointments with various specialists, they discovered that their SON had a very serious heart defect called hyperplastic left heart syndrome, which means two out of his four chambers did not develop, essentially providing him with half of a heart. He also has a small/medium omphalocele on his abdomen. These conditions in themselves are very serious and life threatening. However, they just recently discovered after having some blood work done that their son has been diagnosed with Trisomy 13, a very rare chromosome disorder which has the potential of affecting all systems of the body, thus explaining the two major defects already encountered. Most medical research and knowledge will tell you that this disorder is not survivable. Most infants, if they make it through utero, will pass shortly after birth. This news combined with the seriousness of his heart defect does not leave this family with promising odds.
The Myers realize at this point, there is nothing that they can do to change what they already know, so they put it all in God's hands. God chose them to be this little boy's parents, so they plan to embrace that as much as possible and to fulfill whatever greater plan he has for their family.
"We intend on cherishing every second we have with him and including Gerard in everything that we do. He isn't just a baby in my belly, he is our son, that we love dearly. We remain faithful and hopeful and put all of our trust in the Lord. We ask that you help us by sending up your prayers for baby Gerard. Obviously, we pray for a miracle; that he will be alleviated of all of these complications, but also we pray for strength. Strength for him, and for our family as we walked down this difficult path. Through the intercession of St. Gerard (patron saint of expectant mothers), St. Gianna (patron saint of difficult pregnancies), St. Margaret (patron saint of the unborn) and St. Anthony (patron saint of miracles), we pray and we ask for you to do the same", says Kayan.
Please help this family on their long journey. There will be a Chili Feed & Auction with all proceeds going to Adam & Kayan to help alleviate the financial burdens of their journey. It will be held on Saturday, November 29th at the Knights of Columbus (1723 Main Street in Parsons, Kansas). Dinner will begin at 5:00 p.m.
If you would like to contribute to this cause, we are accepting donations to be auctioned. No item is too small or too large; we will graciously accept and add to a basket. If you are interested in volunteering your services the evening of the dinner then please contact one of the following:
