On Sunday (May 1st), I was supposed to fly to El Salvador to compete in the Continental Chess Championship but instead I ended up in the emergency room of a hospital. Before I tell you the story at the hospital, here a bit about myself.

I started to play chess when I was 7 years old and since then I have been linked to the magical world of chess. I'm now 31 years old and I have been very blessed to be able to teach students from different ages and backgrounds. I have been a chess coach at a public school and at different chess academies . As a professional chess player, I have played in the Olympic team of my country. I used to live in the U.S for 8 years (Texas and California) and a year ago I came back to my country (Ecuador) where I keep teaching online and pursuing my chess career. In the U.S and in Ecuador, I have always try to give back to the community by doing simuls, organizing chess workshops and so on. Here is a coverage about it...

Let's go back to the hospital... On Sunday, since the morning, I was feeling in pain, and I had to cancel my classes and put in a hold the trip to the Continental chess tournament in El Salvador. My parents took me to the hospital. After some exams and a few hours, the doctor said that I needed urgently to get an appendectomy. After this notice, the trip to the tournament was canceled and of course I lost the cost of the travel tickets (since I bought the cheapest option) and more important, I lost the possibility to play against the best player of the continent. The appendectomy went well, and I had to stay couple days at the hospital.

Here is me, trying to stay positive at the hospital :)

I just got home and now I need to rest, follow a diet etc. I still feel some aches and I can't do all the teaching and training that I used to do. The next days or weeks (the doctor will have the last word), I need to have patience. Probably the hardest part, is to realize that a few days ago, I was teaching as usual, doing exercise, training chess, and getting ready for the tournament. Everything was fine. And now I can't do exercise, I need to teach- study less and take my life step by step.

I am happy that I am alive and that all of this happened here in my home city and not at the airplane or the tournament. Appendicitis could get complicated if not detected at the right time.

Unfortunately, I was not expecting to get this emergency and all the costs related to this. The bill of the hospital was 3.229 USD (you can check the hospital bill here ) and would increase with the medicine and the doctor appointments.

As many of you know, since June t last year, I was detected a microadenoma in the brain so I have been spending in MRI's, medicine and doctors ( you can read here the news in Spanish related to the microadenoma )

So it is financially hard for me to now all sudden have to pay the appendectomy.

Mi nombre es Carla Heredia, soy ajedrecista profesional y entrenadora de ajedrez. La mayoría de mis estudiantes me llama "coach" Carla...

El domingo (1ro de mayo), se suponía que volaría a El Salvador para competir en el Campeonato Continental de Ajedrez, pero terminé en emergencias de un hospital. Antes de que les cuente la historia en el hospital, aquí un poco sobre mí...

Empecé a jugar al ajedrez a los 7 años y desde entonces he estado vinculado al mágico mundo del deporte ciencia. Ahora tengo 31 años y he sido muy bendecida de poder enseñar a estudiantes de diferentes edades y orígenes. He sido entrenadora de ajedrez en una escuela pública y en diferentes academias de ajedrez. Como ajedrecista profesional, he jugado en el equipo olímpico de mi país. Solía ​​vivir en los EE. UU. durante 8 años (Texas y California) y hace un año regresé a mi país (Ecuador) donde sigo enseñando en línea y siguiendo mi carrera de ajedrez. En Estados Unidos y en Ecuador, siempre he intentado dar a la comunidad de diferentes maneras. Organizando simultáneas de ajedrez, siendo parte de talleres etc. Acá un reportaje sobre actividades y mi carrera.

Volvamos al hospital... El domingo, desde la mañana, me sentía con dolor, y tuve que cancelar mis clases y poner en pausa el viaje al torneo continental en El Salvador. Mis padres me llevaron al hospital. Después de algunos exámenes y algunas horas, el doctor dijo que necesitaba urgentemente hacerme una apendicectomía. Después de esta noticia, el viaje al torneo tuve que cancelarlo y por supuesto perdí el costo de los boletos de viaje (ya que compré la opción más barata) y más importante, perdí la posibilidad de jugar contra los mejores jugadores del continente. La apendicectomía salió bien y tuve que quedarme un par de días en el hospital.

Aquí estoy yo, tratando de mantenerme positiva en el hospital :)

Acabo de llegar a casa y ahora necesito descansar, seguir una dieta, etc. Todavía siento algunos dolores y no puedo dar todas las clases ni hacer el entrenamiento que solía hacer. Los próximos días o semanas (el médico tendrá la última palabra), necesito tener paciencia. Probablemente la parte más difícil es darme cuenta de que hace unos días estaba enseñando como siempre, haciendo ejercicio, entrenando ajedrez y preparándome para el torneo. Todo estaba bien. Y ahora no puedo hacer ejercicio, necesito enseñar- estudiar menos y llevar mi vida paso a paso.

Estoy feliz de estar viva y de que todo esto haya sucedido aquí en mi ciudad natal y no en el avión o el torneo. La apendicitis puede complicarse si no se detecta en el momento adecuado.

Desafortunadamente, no esperaba tener esta emergencia y todos los costos relacionados con esto. La factura del hospital es de 3.229 USD (puedes consultar la factura del hospital aquí ) y aumentará con los medicamentos y las citas médicas.

Como muchos saben, desde junio del año pasado me detectaron un microadenoma en el cerebro por lo que he estado gastando en resonancias magnéticas, medicinas y médico (puedes leer aquí la noticia sobre el microadenoma )

Así que es económicamente difícil para mí tener que pagar ahora de repente la apendicectomía.
