Ryder's Medical Bills

Donation protected
Hi guys, my name is Rachel and I'm fundraising for my puppy Ryder's medical bills.

I bought Ryder from a breeder in San Diego on Sunday (10/23). He was a tiny little guy, weighing about 1.6 pounds. He is a toy poodle and when I picked him out on Tuesday 10/18, he was super energetic and ran right up to me and just plopped in my lap. He was playing with me and had energy like puppies normally do. However, on Sunday 10/23, when I brought him home, he was showing signs of lethargy right away and threw up once, but I didn't think anything of it. I just assumed it was normal for a puppy to be stressed after going home / to a new place for the first time. He ate dinner and was playing around a little bit, but he would fall asleep at my feet mid-playing with a toy.

When Monday morning (10/24) rolled around, I offered him breakfast but he wouldn't eat a single thing. I offered him at least 10 different types of food, including chicken, rice, 3 types of wet puppy food, his normal dry food, treats, honey, peanut butter, etc.) and then he starting throwing up beginning early afternoon. He would drink water and then throw up immediately after, and he was throwing up randomly. He threw up about 15-20 times. At night time, he began throwing up foam and I got super worried and knew something was wrong, so I took him to the ER Monday night around 12:30 AM (10/25). They ran a Parvo test but it was negative thankfully, so they gave him some Zofran and told me he is probably stressed out from the move & he will eat tomorrow.

Tuesday morning (10/25) rolled around and Ryder still wouldn't eat anything and he was sleeping nonstop. I would pick him up and put him on the floor to try and get him to eat or drink water and he would fall asleep on the spot. He would drink water and fall asleep at his water bowl. He would go pee on his pee pee pad and fall asleep on top of his pee. He had 0 energy and had some diarrhea. At this point, Tuesday afternoon, I knew something was really wrong. It was now 7 PM (a little over 48 hours after picking him up from the breeder) and he still wouldn't eat a single bite of food or even move at all. I got even more types of food and tried everything, but still nothing. So I took him back to the ER around 8 PM on Tuesday night (10/25) and they rushed him into critical care and admitted him into the ICU. He was extremely hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) from not eating for 2 days. They ran another Parvo test because they said that sometimes it takes a little to show up. Negative again. They also started him on an IV w/ fluids, dextrose and a few medications. Wednesday morning, they were able to run a fecal test. He still wouldn't eat a single bite of food and was sleeping nonstop, so they decided to keep him another night until they could get the fecal results back. Thursday morning (10/27) they got the fecal results back and it was positive for a parasite called Giardia. They said that Ryder was eating a little and feeling better, and that I could come pick him up. I picked him up around 11 AM. He came home and was still exhibiting the same symptoms (extreme lethargy and wasn’t eating at all). I force fed him wet puppy food mixed with water through a syringe every few hours because he is prone to hypoglycemia and it happens super quickly with puppies of his size / breed, and it had already happened the day before. I woke up three times throughout the night to feed him as well. Despite my offering him at least 15 different types of food, he still had no interest in even looking at anything. He was still sleeping nonstop and could barely walk. He was in pain and would keep turning around while he was sleeping to try and get comfortable and make the pain go away.

In the morning on Friday 10/28, Ryder was still in the exact same condition and I was so worried about the little guy. I called the hospital and they said I should bring him back in, so I did around noon. He was examined and found to be hypoglycemic again. He was then admitted to the hospital to stay another night for treatment and IV fluids / medications.

On Saturday 10/29, I woke up extremely optimistic again. I have remained positive throughout this situation, I have to stay strong for him. I went to visit Ryder around 3 PM and the doctor told me that his ultrasound showed that he had Pancreatitis in addition to the Giardia. Pancreatitis is swelling of the Pancreas and it is unheard of in puppies, it’s extremely rare. Dogs can get Pancreatitis at a way older age from things like a high fatty diet. Ryder has been eating puppy food, nothing high in fat or anything else that would lead to Pancreatitis. The doctors have no idea what caused this, but said it could possibly be from the Giardia or another unknown cause (like a congenital defect of some underlying condition). They told me that if Ryder doesn’t eat in the next 24 hours, we would have to try and place a feeding tube through his nose into his stomach (an NG tube). If they can’t get the tube in him because he is so tiny, that we would have to consider the possibility of putting him down.

This whole situation has been hell. I am saying prayers for my baby at this point and hoping that he starts eating today and is able to fight this. I made a GoFundMe page at this time because Ryder’s medical bills keep climbing, and have now totaled over $12,000 that I have to pay out of pocket. I honestly did not expect this at all, nor would anyone expect this to happen 24 hours after buying a puppy from a reputable breeder. I honestly can’t afford these bills right now and am asking for help to pay for his hospitalizations & treatment. I appreciate any amount of support and truly thank you all for considering helping us out in our time of need.

Prayers for Ryder <3 Will keep you all updated about his condition within the next few days.
