Dr.  Adam Barsella and I are raising money to expand the amount of books we can hand out in our pediatric residency clinic as part of our quality improvement project.  Currently we handout books starting at 6 months but studies have shown the importance of early reading, starting as soon as birth, to expose children to as many words as possible. With our project, we hope to fill the literacy gap by implementing a program that starts giving books to families at our patients’ first visit. Our project also includes informational handouts for parents that explain why reading is so important to their child’s development, as well as partnering with local libraries to encourage exploration into the literacy world.
