For 10 years after its founding in 2008, Greening Forward impacted the lives of young climate activists across the US through conferences, student grants, and eco-contests. However, in 2018 we were approached by a phenomenal youth leader, Forbi Perise. He had an ambitious mission - to create the first youth-chartered climate organization in his country, Cameroon.
We were captivated, and formed Greening Forward Cameroon as one of our programs to support his goals. Since then, we have been funding their efforts and leveraging the brand of Greening Forward to channel resources to Perise and his team. In the fall of 2023, after 6 years of incredible youth environmental work and change in the country, we decided to shift from a US-focus and make Greening Forward Cameroon our organization’s primary program. This culminated with us traveling to Cameroon for the first time to meet Perise, his team, and hundreds of local youth, and see first-hand the impact they have been making.
Greening Forward Cameroon’s programs have reached tens of thousands of young people across over 20 schools through innovative and engaging initiatives, many of which were the first of their kind in the country. Some examples include:
- Facilitating 2 Eco Soccer competitions, where participating teams are only allowed to play when they’ve collected enough plastic waste from their communities and carried out environmental education campaigns.
- Creating a Wave Library consisting of over 700 donated climate books and supplying schools with environmental textbooks to raise the level of climate awareness in several communities
- Hosting several youth eco-conferences such as the Wind Summit in July 2023, which engaged and empowered over 50 young leaders to network with other climate activists and develop specific plans to take action in their communities.
In just the 1 week we were in Cameroon, the team spoke to over 3000 students, donated and planted trees at 2 schools, hosted a beach cleanup with over 20 volunteers and the head of environment for the southwest region of the country, and led a 30-person seminar focused on Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development. One young person even told us during our trip how Greening Forward inspired her graduate studies to investigate climate disaster preparedness for a local coastal community. The impact the group is making in Cameroon is already incredible, and this is only the beginning.
We created this GoFundMe because so many people have asked us why we went to Cameroon in the first place. And now we’re not only telling you, but we are also inviting you to be a part of this phenomenal movement! Will you join us in supporting the general operating support of these inspiring programs?
Sincerely,
Robert Walton and Charles Orgbon
