We are raising money for sandbags to help stop the increasingly regular and damaging flooding at Gwydir Castle.
Consistently let down by Welsh Government, we have no other option but to try to stop the flooding ourselves. We have been overwhelmed by the support and practical help offered by so many people.
To secure the future of this incredibly important Grade 1-listed Tudor house we need to sandbag 400 metres of the historic garden perimeter to stop the water pouring in each time the River Conwy bursts its banks.
At least ten out of 82 trees with preservation orders on them have died this year alone, directly because of the flooding. It is time to act to prevent more losses in the Grade 1 listed garden, and the increasing damage to the fabric of the house itself.
We know sandbagging is not ideal and a wall or a proper embankment (as was promised by NRW in 2000 and then reneged upon) would be a permanent solution; but we just don't have the £350,000 this would cost to build. Every penny we earn goes on the upkeep of Gwydir itself. This is why we are now asking for your help.
Those who can't help fill sandbags have asked if they can donate money to the cost of buying the sand and the machinery we will need to construct the bank. This is a first for us, so here goes! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for the amazing support you've already shown. With your help Gwydir will stand for another 500 years, and who knows, one day we might even reach our target for constructing a permanent flood wall to protect Gwydir from future floods.
