My name is Kate and I am asking for any help in raising funds for my partners eye surgery.
Guy was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 9 and has been navigating life around it for the last 24 years, but as is common with T1 Diabetes there is a cost on one of more parts of the body.
Guy was diagnosed with Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy in 2023, this excessive growth of fragile blood vessels in the eyes not only risks retinal detachment but leaves him with repeat haemorrhages. Guy was told he was at immediate risk of complete blindness and had been receiving injections and lasers every 6 weeks to try to prevent this from happening.
We are now at a point where Guy cannot have any more maintenance treatment under the NHS and is needing surgical intervention, which is really difficult to get via the NHS and our health insurance won't cover Diabetes/life long conditions. We are really struggling with how impacting these episodes are on Guys mental and physical health and his ability to work and live unimpeded.
Guy is left with significant "debris" from treatment and vessels within his eyes that continue to snap and leave him unable to see due to blood trapped in the vitreous jelly. A Vitrectomy will remove the insides of his eyes and be replaced with a gas bubble to hopefully fix or at least greatly reduce his symptoms.
The surgery privately is £8,500 per eye and he has been told as a consequence of this surgery that he will also need cataract surgery in the near future.
We would be so grateful for any help at all in easing the financial burden of this very much needed operation so he can get back to seeing clearly, being able to do normal activities and live fully! Thank you so much we really appreciate it.
