My name is Dawn. I am a wife, mother, and registered nurse. My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023. I underwent genetic testing earlier this year and was found to be positive for the Chek-2 gene mutation. Having a close family member with a history of breast cancer and also carrying the Chek-2 gene mutation made my risk of developing breast cancer greater than 45%. After many tears, lots of anxiety, as well as in-depth conversations with my husband and children, I finally decided to move forward with a double mastectomy.

In August, I underwent a double mastectomy with reconstruction and placement of expanders. This was followed by a revision surgery one week later due to necrotic (dead) tissue and muscle on the left side/breast. I am scheduled for a 3rd surgery on 12/23/24.

I am blessed to work for an amazing organization through which I have medical leave and short-term disability coverage. However, as many of you know, my husband has been disabled for nearly 20 years now, and I am our main source of income. Both of these long medical leaves (7 weeks the first time & 6 more weeks coming up) have been financially difficult for us since my pay is only a fraction of what I normally make.

Between monthly bills and medical bills, we are struggling to stay afloat and to keep food on the table. Caitlyn, our daughter, has put thousands of dollars on her credit cards for us, but this has also become a financial hardship for her. Any funds received will be used for medical expenses, monthly bills, and groceries.

Deciding to start a GoFundMe was a very hard decision for Chris and me, as we are so proud and hate to ask for help, even though we know that we need it at this time. If there is anything that you can do to help out, we would appreciate it more than you know. Donations, gift cards, meals, anything at all. We are so thankful for all of our friends and family.
