Gunnar’s Road to Recovery
Donation protected
On Tuesday, May 21st, the James Monroe High School Lacrosse Team traveled to Hanover, VA to take on the Hanover Hawks in the State Quarterfinals. The third quarter had just begun and the Hawks had the ball. While trying to defend their goal, Gunnar charged into a Hanover player head first and fell to the ground. He was unable to get up or move.
Gunnar was sent to VCU Medical Center via ambulance. After his arrival, it was quickly determined he had a C4 & C5 fracture to his vertebrae and he went into surgery almost immediately.
His teammates, his friends, the lacrosse team families, his coaches, the JM Athletic Director, the JM Athletic Trainer/Teacher, and the JM Principal and Vice Principal stayed at the hospital until he came out of surgery 4 hours later. The surgery was a success. Gunnar has another surgery today.
