GUNDEGA'S STORY/GUNDEGAS GESCHICHTE

Gundega has been working as a night nurse for the last 16 years. Of Latvian decent, she created a life for herself in Norway and spent the majority of it helping those in need.

She is the mother to three beautiful girls aged 4,7 and 9 years.

In February 2017, Gundega was diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis).
Im Februar 2017 wurde Gundega mit MS diagnostiziert (Multiple Sklerose)

MS is a condition of the central nervous system, interfering with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. It is characterised by sclerosis a Greek word meaning scars. These scars occur within the central nervous system and depending on where they develop, manifest into various symptoms.

in short:

Since her early diagnosis, Gundega has been injecting herself every other week with a medication that is meant to slow the progression of the disease. Unfortunately seeing as the medication only make her feel worse, there is no confirmation on whether or not it's actually having an effect on her.

Because the disease is only in its early stages, Gundega was given a 70%-80% chance of recovery with stem cell treatment abroad.

HSCT (Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation)
HSCT (Hämatopoetische Stammzelltransplantation)

HSCT  attempts to “reboot” the immune system, which is responsible for damaging the brain and spinal cord in MS. In HSCT for MS, hematopoietic (blood cell-producing) stem cells, which are derived from a person’s own bone marrow or blood, are collected and stored, prior to depleting much of the immune system using chemotherapy drugs. Then the stored hematopoietic stem cells are reintroduced to the body. The new stem cells migrate to the bone marrow and over time reconstitute the immune

The Treatment

In general, these are some of the steps involved:
1. A person undergoing HSCT to treat MS is given some form of chemotherapy, usually by infusion in the vein, for up to 10 days (usually as an outpatient) to stimulate the production of bone marrow stem cells and promote their release into the blood. Then some blood is drawn from a vein and the stem cells in the blood are stored for later use.
2. Then the individual is usually hospitalized, and given a powerful mix of chemotherapies for up to 11 days to kill or suppress immune cells throughout the body.
3. The stored stem cells are then infused into the bloodstream through a vein.
4. The individual is usually given medicines such as antibiotics to help combat infection.
5. The person remains in the hospital for an additional period of time while the immune system begins to rebuild itself. Sometimes individuals are discharged from the hospital in two to four weeks.
The immune system gradually rebuilds itself within 3 to 6 months.

This treatment comes with a lot of risks and a high financial cost.  The treatment she is seeking is available in Sweden, Russia, Mexico with Russia having amongst the most experiences. Orginally she was put on a list with a two-year wait  but recently obtained an appointment for the 18th September 2017.

Seeing as it is a rather large amount to come up with, Gundega has turned to friends, family and the public to help support her treatment.  She is only 42 years old and especially because her children are so small she is willing and hoping to take this risky treatment.

Seeing as there is a way to create a much better quality of life, support an amazing wife, daughter and mother to three beautiful girls - I hope we can come together and not let money stand in the way of her continuing to be all that!

Norge utfører kun denne behandlingen for langt kommende MS pasienter.
HSCT utføres i Russland, Sverige, Mexico mfl.

Tusen takk/many thanks!

Med kjærlig og vennlig hilsen,
Gundega Krastina
