The people of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.gullahgeecheenation.com) have been fighting to keep their culture and traditions alive on the land that their families own from Jacksonville, NC to Jacksonville, FL. Over the past thirty, the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition (www.gullahgeechee.net) has led the effort to keep Gullah/Geechee land ownership going and to protect the land and human rights of Gullah/Geechees.
In 2026, the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition launched the "Gullah/Geechee Sacred Site Protection Project." 3200 burials on historic St. Helena Island which is the epicenter of Gullah/Geechee culture have been documented during the first six months of the project. The painstaking and expensive work of not only researching each person that is buried on the island is already being done. However, funding is needed to ensure that ground penetrating radar can be brought in to identify locations of burials that do not have headstones and that is an extremely expensive undertaking for 50 burial areas!
In addition to that work, the burial areas need sustained maintenance and signage. In some cases, there has been damage to vaults. So, we need sponsors for memorials, maintenance and vault repairs. We are dedicated to using a portion of the funds donated annually toward these things. We pray that you will join us in sponsoring the proper care of the resting places of our ancestors. We want to make sure that they are honored and that their spirits truly can rest in the sacred graveyards and cemeteries on the Sea Islands.
In addition to this sacred site work, we continue to focus on various legal battles and efforts toward the land retention for Gullah/Geechees. To that end, the funds raised here will assist with:
• the fundraising for legal matters for Gullah/Geechee land retention and human rights protections
• provide for additional FREE Gullah/Geechee community land rights, heirs property, and human rights workshops and materials so that Gullah/Geechees can protect their land ownership and keep their cultural heritage and traditions alive on their land
• implementation of the Gullah/Geechee Sustainability Plan which focuses on the environmental sustainability and adaptation work on the Sea Islands
We are calling on all those that support the Gullah/Geechee Nation in their continued stand for self-determination to
1) become dues paying members of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition www.gullahgeechee.net which can be done online online at www.gullahgeechee.biz.
