Shelly Guinan was diagnosed with cancer in her right kidney June 16th, 2016. Just a few days later she was rushed to the hospital again, and on June 21st we were told the cancer had already spread to her liver and beyond. On June 24th, she came home on hospice with a 24 hour nurse. The cost of a 24 hour nurse is $600 per day and not covered under insurance. Having Shelly live her last days in her own home, surrounded by loved ones is worth 100 times this cost, but it is adding up.
Shelly and Melissa each taught at Santana High School for 30 years and touched the lives of thousands of students. I don't think I stand alone when I say they changed my life. They are not the random teacher whose name you have forgotten. Ms. Hassell and Ms. Guinan are teachers who made an impact and truly cared for each and every one of their students.
Right now, let's give them the privacy they need to get through this difficult time. A celebration of life will be planned and we will keep everyone updated as to when and where that will be. Please contact me (e-mail button near my name) to add yourself to the update/invite list.
Donations, prayers, thoughts, love, and light are all greatly appreciated!
This page was set up by Carrie Dunnagan (ASB and Yearbook - Class of 1994) and all money will go to Melissa Hassell to help with Shelly's 24 hour care and celebration of life.
Thank you!!!
