Guillain-Barré (GBS) disabled Lucian at 31 yo

Hello everyone and thank you first of all for taking your time to read my son Lucian’s story. My name is Matilde and Lucian is my son who is now 32 years old. He has been going thru many medical ailments the past 4 years. He is a wonderful man, married loves his wife and cares for his 3 rescue cats and 2 rescue dogs. He was an avid muay thai junkie and loved the sport until he got ill.

Initially it started with Crohn’s Disease, A chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the digestive tract which affected him and his normal routine but he pushed on and now learned to live with his disease. About a year or so he had to undergo surgery for Ulcerative colitis and had to endure that surgery and recover so that he won’t get an infection as he was building up liquids in the pores of his rectum. He was doing great working his two jobs and his wife working life was good.

Then on 01/02/2023 he was taken to emergency when his mother n law saw him collapsed on the floor of his bedroom barely breathing. The paramedics put him in her car and she drove him to emergency. Once there he was placed on a ventilator to assist him with his breathing and a feeding tube and pumped up with pain meds and meds to save his life. At some point he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). GBS is characterized by the rapid onset of numbness, weakness, and often paralysis of the legs, arms, breathing muscles, and face. Paralysis is ascending, meaning that it travels up the limbs from fingers and toes towards the torso. Loss of reflexes, such as the knee jerk, are usually found. He stayed in the ICU for almost a month he pays out of pocket for his medical monthly and the cost is getting so huge he depleted his saving account to pay bills as also his wife had to take time off unpaid to be by his side night and day at the hospital. Lucian, and his wife Erika have fallen behind on their rent, basic utilities as they had no income and the state of California is delayed with medical disability payments which won’t cover all of their mounting expenses. Lucian also has to pay for his physical therapy weekly and it’s 45.00 per visit and it is vital for his recovery. 

Lucian is back home after a small stay in rehab facility that was not productive for him, now with limited mobility and he is determined to get back on track but he cannot do it alone and needs assistance to be able to not stress or worry about financial inabilities to pay his responsibilities. I’m his mother I have helped as much as I can myself I sold my stocks to make ends meet pulled out loans from 401k and I’m tapped out! Any amount helps to reach the goal so lucian and Erika can keep their home and keep lights on and also continue his medical recovery. When he came home mid February, he was not able to walk let alone feed himself he has since have achieved so much progress. He can now walk with assistance of walker he can feed him self to some degree. He needs a lot of work on his upper body so he can basically get rid of the t-Rex syndrome he has on his upper body.

Lucian and Erika are not the type of couple who ask for hand outs and have struggled to be successful in their marriage, relationship and life. Lucian will soon be going to acute rehab to get him more mobile and gain his independence back. Thank you for reading and understanding and most of all your support!
