Help to Pay My Guide Dog Expenses

Donation protected
Please help me pay for my Guide Dog's care and burial expense.

My name is Gary Adler. I am permanently disabled and live on very limited income. I have a difficult time just getting by. I am mobility and visually impaired, legally blind. I have virtually no peripheral vision and lost my perception. This was caused by steroidal medication which was inadvertently provided to me for a wrong diagnosis. Over long term use, the steroids deteriorated my optic nerve. I never received any compensation for these damages.

Since, I have been dealt with many medical hurdles and somehow I manage to find a way to overcome them and survive. I believe that much of this ability has come from having the assistance and companionship of a service dog.

I was fortunate to have a Guide/Service Dog whose name was Storm. He was bred for me from a line of service dogs and was donated to me by the breeder, for which I am forever thankful.

My beloved Storm passed away on June 17, 2015 after a heroic battle to stay alive by my side. I am grief stricken by this horrific loss. Words can not express my true feelings.

As a Service Dog, he was permitted to go with me just about everywhere, with very little exception.
He was always attentive and there when I needed his assistance. He knew what help I need without having to prompt him. He was incredible!

I don't just sit at home and do nothing. I founded and run a nonprofit charity comprised of celebrities who volunteer their time and talents. We have raised millions for charitable causes, community service projects and helped those in need and/or less fortunate on a global basis.

A division of our nonprofit provides emergency management and search & rescue services. Storm was also trained and has served in a Search and Rescue Dog capacity.

In addition, I advocate for persons with disabilities like mine and otherwise. I am an active participant on several other nonprofit boards. I receive no income from any of these volunteer positions.

Storm was having a rough go at it; he was at the vet often having to be catherized and on IV. He went to the vet several times a week for continued observation, care and to replenish meds.

He was having issues with his bladder and fluid in one side of his lungs. He had difficulty emptying his bladder completely and had aspirated some fluids into his lung. I had to massage his bladder before I took him potty to ease his relief efforts. Storm was on meds to help relax his bladder, relieve any pain, and to help eliminate the fluid in the lung.

In March 2015, while I was in surgery rehab at a nursing facility, Storm picked up a bacterial infection there which almost took his life. He had to be hospitalized for more than a week.

Three veterinary specialists who reviewed his test results had said he wouldn't make it. But he battled back and he did make it! Thank God that infection had been resolved! He was not ready to go anywhere without me!

Storm's mind was totaly together. He slept next to my bed. He would get up and follow me around the apartment. When he lay down for a nap, a few minutes later he would get up and look for me to make sure I was alright. When we walked together he continually guided me. He had always done this throughout his life.

Sometimes people may see me get around on my own and think, "oh see, he doesn't need a guide dog!". Little do you know just how scary and hazardous this is for me without peripheral vision or perception. Storm was not just my guide but also he was my protector. He really watched my back, and my sides. He was trained much differently and individually for me than a typical seeing eye dog. He was also a service dog as he found things and picked up things for me.

This was ONE very amazing and special dog.

The vet, her staff, and I were trying to provide Storm with the best available options to maintain his quality of life for as long as we could. I loved Storm with all my heart and would have done anything for his well-being.

Some of you will say, "oh you can just get another dog." Storm was not a pet, it is not that simple! There is nothing like the relationship we had as a person with disabilities and his service dog. No human can ever duplicate what he did for me.

Storm was my family, all I had! He was my peripheral vision, my perception, and so much more. He loved me and he was a fighter to the very end.

I need some time to grieve for Storm before I can even think about getting another service dog. Please respect this. The time will come when I am ready, and only I will know when the time is right for me.

The veterinary services, medication bills, and funeral expenses are over $12,000. I need help to pay these outstanding bills.

With these heavy additional expenses I am struggling to pay the rent, to put gas in the car, and to keep food on the table. Unfortunately, I have to watch every penny and make sure they benefit me in the best way possible. I am thankful for the access to the local food bank when I am in need of their services.

With my disabilities and recovery time from severe illness it is a challenge, yet I am fervently researching and working daily on organizing events through which I can earn an income. I do not feel strong enough yet to go back into radio, and photography is too much for me at this point. I do what I can do, the best that I can.

Please help me to raise my goal! Your generous donation will help me to move forward. Please help me ensure Storm's legacy and memory is not tarnished by unpaid bills and collections.

I thank you for your support and your prayers.
