The people of Guatemala have been devastated by a violent eruption of Volcán de Fuego on Sunday, June 3rd, 2018.
Vamos Adelante is a non-profit that my family, friends and I have worked with for many years. Two of the 24 villages helped by Vamos Adelante, El Rodeo and San Miguel Los Lotes, were covered in fast moving pyroclastic flow (a combination of lava, ash, fumes & rocks) that killed many and largely ruined the villages. Entire families have perished, and many people are still searching for loved ones. People have been evacuated and emergency personnel are searching for survivors, and unfortunately also retrieving bodies of those who did not survive. Homes, roads and infrastructure have been destroyed. When the villagers are allowed to return, Vamos Adelante will help them rebuild, restore and replenish.
These people are indigenous, poor and their lives were a struggle prior to this disaster. Vamos Adelante has helped them for over 20 years by building schools; helping to feed the elderly; providing medical services, check-ups and vaccinations at a clinic staffed by volunteer doctors & dentists; providing water filters, woodstoves, solar lamps and piglets; finding sponsors for families so that children can attend school and not work in the fields at a young age; providing scholarships so that children can attend middle school and high school in larger villages; and much more.
