Our Story...
This is the second time I have tried to get the words out. I can't believe that our life has managed to fall apart so quickly. My sister has cared for our mom and grandpa for years. She has given them around the clock in home care so she hasn't had a job (outside the home in almost a decade).
Our mom is schizophrenic and has short-term memory loss as well mobility issues. She has had a few transient ischemic attack (TIA). Most people still call them mini-strokes.
She falls and needs help getting up. She shakes as well on the good day it is a bad case of tremors and on the bad ones people think she has Parkinson. She was hit by a car when she was twelve and had major nerve damage done. As she got older it has gotten worse. She is now 66 and they doubt that anything can be done to really help, beyond the exercises to strengthen her muscles that she does daily. My sister made sure both my mom and grandpa kept up with their home care prescribed exercises.
Grandpa has had a heart attack and a stroke in the past. He was extremely hard of hearing as well. Otherwise, he had always been healthy as a horse. He bounced back from both of those things better than anyone could believe. In July he had trouble moving and we sent him to the hospital. They shuffled him back and forth between nursing home for therapy and the hospitals. He was supposed to come home, sadly he never did. He would have been 92 this month.
They are now living in a mobile home I rented for them in 2008. I wanted them close to me so I could help them out as needed and I have done what I could for them since then, providing transportation and helping with the upkeep and repairs on the house.
The lot rent has gone up to the point where now they are being charged more than most people pay on a mortgage for their houses.
When I found the trailer I was working as a restaurant manager. Unfortunately our whole chain closed and I have since taken a job waiting tables. I still help out, they are my family, but I don’t make near what I did before.
We have no one else besides us, the other family members had offered but now, when it is needed most, suddenly none are able to help out.
With my help we can afford a small apartment for them, but I am having trouble with the last and security deposit. It is horrible that we are having to ask strangers to do what family can’t but here I am, asking for help today.
