GTA Hospital Workers Need Masks - You Can Help!

Donation protected
We all know there is a shortage of personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves available to the hospital heroes battling Covid-19. The problem is not just a lack of money. The commercial suppliers and manufacturer simply cannot provide enough for the hospitals.

Our goal is to raise enough money to negotiate fair prices for bulk purchases from the people who hoarded supplies both innocently or callously for profit. We are asking these people to donate and if they will not, we will negotiate the best price possible. We're doing this because what matters most is that the heroes protecting us have the equipment they need.

Who are we?

Siblings who were born and raised in the GTA; a U of T Law Student, a recent Osgoode Hall Law School Graduate and a Clinical Research Coordinator working at a Toronto Hospital. We are individuals witnessing many of our friends and colleagues putting themselves at risk in the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19 and want to help by doing more than just sitting on the couch.

Why are we doing this?

Hospitals and frontline workers urgently need crucial personal protective equipment (PPE), such as masks, gowns and gloves, in order to treat patients while protecting themselves from getting ill. Hospitals are rationing, commercial supplies are nearly exhausted, the supply chain is lagging and Toronto area hospitals are under imminent threat of running out of these supplies.

The situation is so bad that North York General Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre have begun PPE drives (https://theppedrive.com/; https://sunnybrook.ca/content/?page=novel-coronavirus-covid-19-donate-masks-ppe) and the city of Windsor has sent out city workers to collect masks from the public. These are just a few examples.

WE CAN ALL DO MORE to fight the pandemic than staying home (though social distancing is incredibly important, so please stay home!).

Many people have hoarded these crucial supplies, either panic buying for themselves, or because they intended to profit by reselling them. We are willing to put our time and effort into finding, negotiating for, and collecting supplies that would not otherwise go to hospitals. We need your help to get any available PPE where it is needed most.

All funds raised in this campaign will go to getting crucial PPE into the hands of Toronto’s frontline hospital workers. We are donating 100% of our time on this project and will deliver to the hospitals free-of-charge.

How will we do this?

We will collect monetary donations and purchase PPE from any readily available sources to get them to hospitals faster than the lagging supply chains. We will put our time and effort into hunting down PPE from all non-traditional sources. We will buy from individuals, watch Kijiji etc like hawks, reach out to tattoo artists, nail and hair salons and other businesses that will have supplies but have not been targeted by public health efforts in the way that dentists and others have been.

We will collect donations of PPE from individuals who have purchased more than they need but are afraid or unable to bring them to the hospitals themselves.

Please note that they must be in original packaging for the hospitals to accept them.

Our plan is increase the overall supply by tapping into non-traditional sources, but we will be flexible in our approach. If market conditions change and more traditional sources become more available, efficient, and cost effective, will focus on sourcing from the most efficient sources available at the time.

Increasing the supply of PPE available to health care workers is our primary goal.

How can you help?

We understand that money is tight for many at this time but there are many ways that you can support and protect our healthcare workers!

- Donate masks, hand sanitizer, goggles, gowns, or other PPE. You may be surprised how much useful PPE you already own, such as gloves you bought for cleaning your home, long unused vented goggles from your children’s science classes and any extra hand sanitizer. If you cannot donate directly to the hospital PPE drives, please email us at '[email redacted]' to coordinate pick-ups/drop-offs.

- Monetary donations - every dollar counts!

- Inform us of individuals who are selling masks to the public so that we can negotiate bulk purchasing at fair pricing, or suggest any other sources of PPE for us to pursue (individuals, businesses, categories of businesses that use these supplies, etc).

- Encourage your friends and families to share their excess supplies.

Help us to fill the gap and provide PPE to our Toronto hospitals that would not otherwise get into the right hands. Normal suppliers will eventually meet the demand but OUR FRONTLINE HEROES NEED PPE NOW.

We will keep you in the loop!

We will update the page as often as possible with photos of the gathered supplies being dropped off at hospitals, so that you can see how your contribution is helping!

***All funds and supplies will be donated to Toronto area hospitals.
