I have been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. 16 cores taken, 12 were cancerous. In my particular case, the location of the cancers is much more difficult to treat, while maintaining quality of life.
My urologist, Dr. Pugach at Pacific Coast Urology, has recommended High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) as the best treatment option. This treatment is not available in the US at this time. The FDA doesn't approve as the FDA sees it as experimental, therefore, it is not covered by insurance in the US. However, Canada and several Latin American and European countries have successfully adopted this treatment.
I do not qualify for clinical trials, due to my extremely high PSA (47.)
The cost runs from $20k in Canada to $45k in Europe. My urologist uses a facility in Mexico for this treatment.
I want to be able to maintain my quality of life and become a spokesperson for how successful HIFU treatments are; so that it can become available in the US. US males deserve treatment options for their #2 killer.
