Melanie Smith recently lost her battle against pancreatic cancer at the age of 38. Melanie is survived by her husband Sjon and her sons Devon (19) and Jamahl (15). Over the last year, Melanie underwent many rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. She was in extreme pain through all of her treatment, and always put on a brave face; she was determined to beat the odds.
Melanie moved her kids to to California in 2005 hoping for a better life. She had a successful career as an IT analyst, and worked hard to give her kids opportunities that she didn't have growing up. Her lifelong dream was to get married, own a home, and enjoy vacations and good times with friends. She met Sjon Smith, the love of her life in 2010, they were married April 18, 2012. She seemed to have everything she had ever wanted. She was surrounded by people she loved, and people who loved her. On May 15, 2013 Melanie went to the ER thinking she had galls stones, instead she diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She started chemotherapy the next day. Melanie remained positive and hopeful until the day she died. Sjon was by her side, every step of the way, spending many nights sleeping at the hospital, taking care of Melanie's every need. As expected, finances are challenging as Melanie was not able to work, and Sjon took so many days off to care for his wife. The money collected through this fund will go directly to Sjon and the boys, to help pay for funeral and other household expenses. They should not have to worry about money in their time of grief. Any donation amount would be appreciated. The Smith/Sonnenberg/Drammeh family are not used to asking for help as they are usually the family that is helping others in need. Please consider donating. Thank You! Jennifer Angel (Melanie's best friend)
