GROWING HOPE FOR KRISTY FISCHER
Kristy Fischer noticed something strange happening to her body. The skin on one of breasts began to peel and scab. Her nipple would bleed and get stuck to her bra or shirt.
At first, Kristy didn’t think much about it. She was busy being a single Mum, looking after her young daughter Abby, who lives with Autism. She was learning to drive and taking Abby to all the therapy sessions afforded to her.
Kristy carried on with life, however, eventually was unable to ignore the symptoms any longer, so she went and saw a doctor ........
Kristy had Paget disease of the breast, a rare form of cancer that affects the skin and nipple.
The first thing Krik thought was, ‘This can’t be cancer! I'm way too young.'
It's completely heartbreaking to tell a young woman she has breast cancer. They have so much life ahead of them – getting married, having children, pursuing their dreams. To make matters worse Krik has lost several friends to cancer in the past few years. You can imagine how scary the news was to her.
Kristy underwent a double mastectomy within a month. And is about to embark on months of chemotherapy treatments that will leave her feeling exhausted and nauseous.
As one of her best friends, I want to make her journey as easy as possible. I don't want her to worry about money. I want her to concentrate on being well.
She is now in Sydney, however she has lived some of her life in Port Macquarie.
