Growing food, ecology and community in Decatur

 Roots Down is... an organization that inspires, facilitates, and supports productive urban landscapes. We work with community members, youth, landscapers, and governments to make productive landscapes a reality in cities across the country. 

 We envision a world where... food is abundant, local, and grown as a result of community effort; where the landscapes we pass by in our communities every day are beneficial to environmental wellbeing; and where food security is a human right.

 We make our vision a reality by…working with municipalities and public works departments to reimagine their landscapes; providing training and resources to landscaping companies; and leading educational workshops for youth and community members.  

 So far we have... installed 15 productive landscapes in the metro Atlanta area, led 10 workshops for youth and adults, and graduated a cohort of 4 landscape advocates. We have earned long-term contracts with 2 cities, 1 private organization, and partnered with non-profits, like Trees Atlanta and Micro-Life Institute, to make the biggest impact possible.

 But we need your help… Our far-reaching goal starts with making big gains in our local community so that we can serve as a beacon for other communities across the country.

--Developing youth educational programs that are affordable and accessible for kids throughout the community, regardless of their parents’ socioeconomic status

--Creating more robust training programs and resources that empower eco-friendly landscaping companies to be competitive on large contracts

--Building an educational community space where we people can learn and grow together 

 ***For too long, our landscapes and our communities have been sterile, toxic, and unproductive spaces. The time, money,and resources already going into these spaces can be used for a much greater purpose. Now is the time to make a positive change.***

 By investing in better landscapes we can... increase food security, restore the environment, and encourage long-term sustainability. Productive Urban Landscapes are beautiful, safe, community spaces that provide educational opportunities for children and create job opportunities for green businesses. They also improve public health by reducing the number of chemicals, machines, and noise in maintaining them.
