Groceries & Rent for DC Students & Families

As many of you know, I am a teacher for recently arrived immigrant students in Washington, DC. An already socioeconomically vulnerable population, the COVID-19 crisis has had a catastrophically devastating impact on our community's families. Disproportionately employed in industries undergoing mass layoffs, the social safety net does not reach them. Unlike you and I, most have no access to government benefits including unemployment compensation and health care, and have been left out of the city's relief funding.
Our students are expected to be learning from home during this time. While some are submitting assignments and keeping up with expectations despite working from cell phones on empty stomachs, others are in survival mode. My students and their families are facing rent shortages and severe food scarcity. Single parents of multiple children have lost all three of their jobs, and students cannot complete school work because they have stomachaches and headaches from hunger. I am asking for your help.
The people I am talking about are not strangers. They bring you your dinner in your favorite restaurants, pick up the food you drop on the floor at baseball games and movie theaters, wash the windows in your office building, and paint your apartments. The people who cannot afford to buy food for their children right now are the people who, with their hands, piece by piece, pick the fruits and vegetables you are having delivered to your house without worrying about your own children being fed and safe.
I am asking for your donations that our school-based social work team and I will use for three purposes: 1) to provide grocery store gift cards for families of students in Ward 4, 2) to send diapers and formula directly to families of students with babies, and 3)to provide direct assistance in paying rent and utility bills for families of students in Ward 4.
