On Thursday February 26th, 2026 something heartbreaking happened on Garden Drive.
We discovered a deceased fox in our neighbourhood. We immediately called the Urban Wildlife Care in Grimsby for guidance. When I spoke with Cara from the Urban Wildlife Care, she gently asked us an important question: Did she look like she had been nursing?
With heavy hearts, we checked - and she had been.
That's when we knew there were likely babies somewhere nearby.
The Search
That evening Cara from Urban Wildlife Care, and Cassie from GNHS as well as Travis and myself began searching the area before dark, hoping to find any sign of kits who would now be without their mother. We searched yards, brush, culverts, and anywhere a den might be hidden. As night fell, we had to pause, but none of us could stop thinking about those babies out there without their mother.
Early Friday morning, with more of our wonderful Grimsby community members joining us, we resumed the search. We had the added benefit of a donated snake camera from a concerned animal lover who saw the call for help on Grimsby Community Talk. Jeff a wildlife friend of Cara's who came to assist in the search as well was able to track foot prints to a home on Garden Drive. The home owner graciously let us in the backyard.
Then we heard it - faint cries coming from under a shed!
Carefully and with the support of the Urban Wildlife Care, we located the den. Beneath that shed were 8 tiny fox kits, orphaned and vulnerable and fighting for their life. Within 24 hours of finding their mom, all 8 babies were safely rescued.
What Happens Next
The Urban Wildlife Care will now raise these 8 kits for approximately 20 weeks, providing specialized formula, medical care, proper nutrition, and minimal human interaction so they remain wild. When they are strong and ready, they will be released back into their natural habitat where they belong.
This is an incredible commitment of time, and resources, and expertise.
WHY WE'RE RAISING FUNDS
The Urban Wildlife Care is a local non-profit organization that receives no government funding. Every rescue, every feeding, every medical treatment is supported by donations from people who care. It has been in operation since 2012, completely run by volunteers.
Caring for 8 growing fox kits and other animals that will need assistance this spring is a significant financial responsibility.
That is why I'm creating this GoFundMe.
These foxes were found right here in Grimsby on Garden Drive. Now we have the opportunity to give them a second chance at life in the wild.
Please donate if you can. And if you are unable to give, sharing this page means just as much.
Together, we turned a heartbreaking discovery into a rescue story with hope. Let's help these 8 kits grow strong and return to the wild where they belong!
We will be updating their journey until they are released!
