Alex is turning 5 next week. In lieu of gifts, he has asked to run the Grey Matters 5K with me ("Team Daddy") in Whitesburg, Kentucky on Saturday, May 12th - https://runsignup.com/Race/KY/Whitesburg/GreyMatters5K. It is the first memorial walk/run for both of us. Remarkably, we did a trial run last week and it appears he will be able to run the entire thing!
Alex's father, Phillip Ray Johnson II, died of a brain tumor when Alex was 18 months old. Alex would like to raise $700 for the American Brain Tumor Association and Letcher County ICAN as he is seeking sponsors for the race. The race does not have individual fundraising sites (this is their inaugural event), so we are starting this Go Fund Me site to achieve his birthday fundraising goal.
You will want to watch the video of Alex that we recorded. It may be the sweetest thing ever! I am ridiculously proud of him and know that he is carrying on his father's legacy in a most extraordinary way.
Brain cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death for young adults, yet it receives a very small percentage of national cancer research dollars. As Alex says, "thank you so much for doing this," for helping us to raise money to support brain tumor research, treatment, and support services.
All our love,
Alex (and mom, Nicole)
