Greta Thunberg Takes the Stage in Charlotte
Donation protected
More than 1,200 people--mostly young activists--gathered at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center on Friday, November 8 to hear 16 year-old Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg join local activist, 14 year-old Mary Ellis Stevens (the leader of Charlotte NC's Fridays for Future movement) and a host of other impressive young people speak about the need for climate action, education and justice. It was a remarkable day for Charlotte, full of energy and urgency regarding the devastating effects of climate change.
The event went off seamlessly and Greta delivered a powerful speech , but the work behind the scenes was frantic and hurried. With less than two days to prepare for the event, Mary Ellis enlisted all the help she could, from fellow youth activists to adult allies to 2 of her biggest supporters: her parents. Together, they worked to find a stage and sound system for the event, knowing that if Greta and other speakers could not be seen or heard, the opportunity would be wasted. The Stevenses found the equipment for the event at the very last minute, incurring a $6,435 rental charge to their personal credit card.
If you are able to contribute in support of climate action, education and justice, or youth-led activism, any donation would be appreciated. All contributions will go toward covering the cost of the event and other organizational expenses.
If you want to learn more about Mary Ellis's work and/or want to join her for future school strikes in Charlotte, NC, you can track her progress and see future events by following her here:
