Gregory Roberts Needs Your Help

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Kimberly Smith and I am Gregory Robert’s fiancee. We have been together for a little over a year and never did we expect a year later that we would be dealing with a major, life threatening health concern.

On February 2 we entered the ER thinking he was having a minor issue related to his vertical sleeve gastrectomy. Little did we know that less than six hours later he would be in a six hour life-saving surgery. The surgery was called a TIPS procedure. It turned out that he had a clot in his spleen and a huge clot in his main portal vein of his liver. We have been told that the clot in his liver is the largest that they have ever seen and when they went into break that up, it looked like a pomegranate because behind it were many more clots. Basically, this is a two hour procedure, but it is a rare procedure and the intervention radiologist told us the most difficult procedure that they perform. It took him three hours just to break up all of the clots and then another 2 1/2 to 3 hours to put a stent in. Gregory went into surgery just before 8 PM on Friday, February 2nd and the surgery was completed at 2 AM the next morning. It was after the surgery that I learned from the doctor that Gregory‘s liver had gone from early signs of non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver to very advanced cirrhosis of the liver that was eventually going to require a transplant. He spent 2 nights in ICU before being moved to a regular floor. During this time he was monitored and eventually was considered a candidate and was accepted to transfer to TGH for further evaluation for a transplant. Once here he had to be transferred to the ICU in the middle of the night due to his breathing and very low oxygen saturation levels. It dipped as low as 70. Currently, he still remains in ICU and not only his liver but also his lungs and kidneys are being monitored. Daily we have multiple doctors including hematology, hepatology, infectious disease, nephrology, internists, physical therapists and respiratory therapists coming in. As of 2/16/24, he has spent 14 nights in the hospital. We are looking at anywhere from several more weeks to months in the hospital, not including rehabilitation or the transplant. He is looking at anywhere from 2-6 months out of work with a transplant.

I am asking for any help you may want to or feel lead to give. Greg is not working. I am working minimally because I am with him everyday at least 12-14 hours a day and, at times, I am here 24 hours a day. Greg is going on FMLA but does not have PTO to cover the time he is out. He also does not have short term disability. Any way you can help, big or small, will be much appreciated. Financial help will be used for:

  • replacing lost income for Greg so he can properly recover
  • covering some of my income so I can be with Greg as much as possible to aid in his recovery
  • assisting with medical bills not covered by insurance

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated and will relieve a great deal of stress through this process. If you m have questions please feel free to reach out to Kimberly.
