Hello, my name is Semira and I am Gregory's oldest daughter. The day before Thanksgiving break, my mother got a call from the hospital saying Gregory had a seizure at work. This was the first seizure he had. Later we learned this was due to arteriovenous malformation. Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a tangle of blood vessels that irregularly connects arteries and veins, disrupting blood flow and oxygen circulation. Because of his diagnosis of AVM he is no longer able to work full time. The second seizure occurred on our way back from the Mall of America while my dad was driving. Thankfully, we weren't on the freeway and we were just turning onto our block at home and nothing major happened. Now he is on prescribed medication to prevent seizures and was unable to drive. Because of him not working, this has put a huge financial strain on our family. It is hard to pay bills and make ends meet, but we are still thankful we are able to spend quality family time together. Some things that are really hard for our family is that he is unable to do the things that bring him joy like working out, participating in league bowling, reading, singing/rapping/music. Sometimes he can't hold a full conversation and seeing him struggle these past months has not been easy. Moving forward, April 12th is Gregory's scheduled brain surgery. He is having open brain surgery to remove the tangled blood vessels. Recovery will be at minimum 6 weeks and he will not be able to do many acts of daily living until he is completely recovered. This being said, this surgery will let him be completely back to normal, so we are thankful for medical advances to give him this outlook for a sense of normalcy. We hope to raise enough money so that Gregory can get back to being the loving coach, teacher, co-worker, and father we all love.
