Hi, my name is Aisling Kara Berube. On the night of January 3rd, 2026, my grandad, Gregory Lawrence Berube, was tragically shot and killed in his partner's home in an act of domestic violence by his partner's ex-husband.
Grandad was a one-of-a-kind man. He was always willing to lend a hand to those in his community, selfless to a fault. He absolutely loved to dance, and rarely ever missed the Friday evening dances at his local Legion chapter. He loved nature and camping, having been a Scout leader for many years, and had countless bird feeders set up in his backyard with different food catered to the different birds in his area. He loved his family, he was always there for us in our time of need, never forgot a birthday, holiday, or anniversary, and always made us feel loved.
Grandad spent his life working to build our family tree so that we would all know where we came from, and he was proud of his heritage.
The month since grandad was killed has been the hardest month of my life. I've been trying to find a way to memorialize my grandad and honour his legacy, while also navigating the extreme grief that his loss has left me feeling. While the OPP has provided victim support to his son, his daughter in law, and his granddaughter (my dad, mom, and sister), my brother and I in Quebec have been left trying to navigate grief services on our own. On top of that, I've had the added difficulty of my child being born, and having to juggle the unspeakable joy of that, with the heart wrenching grief of knowing that my grandad won't ever get to meet his great grandson, who he was so excited to get to know.
In light of this, it's my goal to honour my grandad in two ways, and that's why I'm starting this GoFundMe. The first is that I would like to give a donation to Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation Assault And Sexual Abuse Program, to help other victims who are experiencing domestic violence in the Cornwall area. The second is that I would like to use a small portion of the fundraiser to get victim grief support for my brother and myself and, if the fund allows, continue the genealogy work that my grandfather started.
Thank you so much for your support. It means the world to me and my family.
Grandad, I hope that doing this makes you proud. I'm sorry it took so long to set up. I miss you so much.
