The night of July 4th, Gregg McGraw suffered a nearly fatal strike from an accident with a firework mortar. A 2.75” x 2.5” projectile penetrated his abdominal wall, destroying the muscles and severing his transverse colon in half. His small bowel was badly damaged in three places and has a laceration and burns on his liver. He’d bled out a substantial amount and was sent into a significant degree of shock. Upon arrival, he was sent straight into an operation where they removed the lodged object and substance along with 7-10 inches of his small bowel and had a damage control laparotomy performed to stop the bowel contents from leaking into his bloodstream. The thumb on his dominant hand was also blown open, destroying joints and exposing muscle and bone. He is currently in the Trauma ICU at Erlanger Baroness on a respirator and a lot of IV fluids with an open surgical wound patched by a vacuum assisted closure while his bowel and colon are detached. He is being taken for regular surgical procedures to wash the area and explore for further damage, particulates and other risks before considering connecting the intestines together. During and in between, he is having his hand washed, examined and assessed for the best course of action there. If you are not able to help financially, then we ask you to please share this on social media to help spread the word. Gregg is a father, a stepfather, a son, a husband, a beloved friend and member of the church — but most importantly, he is a fighter. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.
