Gregg's Medical Co-Pays and Costs

As many of you know, Gregg was diagnosed with bladder cancer in June of 2017.  Since then, the doctors have removed 7 tumors and have recommended a chemo treatment, localized to the bladder, which he is currently undergoing.  The cancer was detected early, and has not penetrated the muscle or migrated elsewhere, and the doctors are saying that with treatment, the chances of that occurring are low.

Unfortunately, Costa Rica, where Audrey and Gregg live, while having excellent health care, has little expertise in bladder cancer. In fact the surgeon that removed the first tumor in CR recommended that Gregg seek treatment in the US.  That brought them to Dana Farber and Brigham and Women’s hospital in Boston.  Gregg has been under their care (including the additional surgeries) since the Fall of 2017.  Audrey and Gregg are optimistic this program will be successful, and the tumors will stop appearing.

And now, the down side. Gregg is covered by Medicare in the US, but he does not have the supplemental coverage that pays the 20% of expenses not covered by Medicare.  Audrey and Gregg didn’t think they would need it, since they live in Costa Rica.  In the past, they have had generous support from friends in terms of housing, travel, and access to a car. They have managed to cover costs until recently.  Their expenses are piling up and they anticipate future travel expenses to the Northeast US, medical treatment co-pays, and the cost of being away from home for an extended period.  I'm hoping Gregg and Audrey's amazing network of friends can help out in this tough time for them.
