Greg & Kendra's Emergency Fund

Sometimes the unexpected and catastrophic can swiftly set us off course. We find ourselves fighting an uphill battle we didn’t foresee, and we’re not sure how (or when) we’ll ever recover. Sometimes you need help…

But it’s not easy to ask for help…to admit you need it. So I’m writing this for my loving big brother (Greg), my strong but overwhelmed sister-in-law (Kendra), my amazingly brilliant two-year old nephew (Eilon), and my sweet, innocent baby niece (Didi).

I’m asking you to please consider helping my brother and his young family…

Greg was suddenly struck with a severe case of Bell’s Palsy on Boxing Day (December 26, 2016).  The onset was unforeseen, swift and completely debilitating. What started as severe neck and head pain, and numbness in his left cheek…quickly turned into a Boxing Night trip to the hospital via ambulance (and an enormous amount of fear for all of us).

Greg’s neck and head pain had become unbearable and, in addition, the left side of his face became completely paralyzed (cannot blink or move any portion of the left side of his face). He later confided to me that his heart broke as the paramedics took him out of his house for transport to the hospital because his little boy Eilon said, “Daddy, I should come with you…I hurt too!”

I’ve never seen my brother in this much pain.  He’s always been my biggest supporter, protector and cheerleader in life. He set the standard for me…a highly ethical, honourable, protective, and loving example of a human being (a true “gentleman”).

Honesty, integrity and hard work are his main focus. I can say with complete sincerity that, at almost 43 years old, he is the purest example of a loving and devoted husband and father.

Kendra, Eilon and Didi are the centre of his universe (his “reason for being”)…and the fact that he’s struggling to continue providing for them during this disability is “destroying” him more than this diagnosis ever could.

We shut down a thirty-year family business two years ago.  Since then Greg has been working hard in an industry that is 100% commission based pay. In addition, as an entrepreneur in the health and life insurance industry he does not qualify for any form of employment insurance (or other forms of government assistance that “employees” of a business can access).

Greg and his family need assistance due to the following:

·      He is in constant, excruciating pain and, therefore unable to work (or even sleep).  He’s had to run a course of steroidal treatment and is now taking prescription pain medication and anti-inflammatories.

·      Because Greg’s unable to work, Kendra (with a two-month old baby girl) needs to return to work full-time…yet they are unable to fund daycare or nanny services.

·      There’s no known effective treatment for Bell’s Palsy…aside from making efforts to manage pain. Many patients recover over time (but the timeframe is unique for each patient, and doctors are unsure when or why it will suddenly go into remission). This condition seems to be a bit of a medical “mystery”.

·      Partial paralysis (permanent damage) of the facial nerve is a possibility, though it seems that early and active intervention can help prevent permanent damage.

·      He is having several appointments a week with the following practitioners (in an effort to manage pain, as well as treat the Bell’s Palsy):

o   Chiropractic

o   Physiotherapy (TENS treatments to try and stimulate the facial nerve)

o   Acupuncture

o   Cranio-sacral

o   Neuro-programming

o   Medical Doctor follow ups

Greg’s first priority right now is getting his pain under control so that he can, once again, work and provide for his family.  His family could use assistance with funding for the following:

·      They are averaging $800/week in visits for the following medical treatments: Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, Cranio-sacral therapy and Neuro-programming.

·      Aside from three different prescription pain treatments, Greg is also taking many supplements that his wife, Kendra (a holistic nutritionist), has researched…and that could help him holistically treat his pain and heal his body. Supplements are averaging $300/week.

·      Daycare costs are not something they can afford right now, however, Kendra needs to work to have an income source for their family.

Our family will be so appreciative of your assistance at this difficult time.

Lots of love to you and yours…when we are in a position to do so (once again) we will be sure to remember any assistance we receive through this amazing site…and “pay-it-forward” for others in need.
