GreenWood’s “TURN it UP!” Campaign

Our Mission:
For more than 25 years GreenWood has worked with artisans in Honduras and the Peruvian Amazon to produce high-quality wood products from well-managed forests. We train woodworkers to use appropriate tools and technologies, and we connect their products to good markets. Our goal: Return as much value as possible from every harvested tree to the folks who depend upon—and help sustain—some of earth’s most endangered forest resources.
In Action:
Since 1993 GreenWood artisans have produced everything from chairs and carved bowls to boats and guitar parts. In the last two years we installed two innovative bicycle lathes and conducted woodturning workshops in off-the-grid forest communities in Honduras. One recent trainee, Juan Vigil, has since produced more than 600 carving mallets for export, generating income for his family in a remote village whose main occupations include subsistence agriculture and illegal gold-mining. GreenWood enterprises like this are making productive use of abundant wood species that would otherwise have little or no market demand.
The GreenWood Challenge:
This hard-won progress now faces a serious challenge. The cancellation of United States development aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador has suspended our longstanding, core support from the U.S. Forest Service. This policy reversal perpetuates the entrenched poverty and incompetent governance that underlie the disintegration of civil society and unprecedented migration. When governments fail to act, it’s time to TURN it UP!
Objectives of our TURN it UP! campaign:
• Involve more artisans and communities in the GreenWood enterprise
• Expand the range of artisanal wood products
• Increase local income
• Explore the market potential for other lesser-known species from well-managed forests
With your help, we plan to:
• Install two new lathes in off-the-grid locations
• Train three new artisan producers
• Harvest and dry enough wood to fulfill current and future mallet orders
• Develop prototypes for at least two new products
