SUPPORT THE GREEN LIGHTNING SOLAR CAR PROJECT.

The Green Lightning Solar Car team from St. John's College (Bahamas) is the only high school from the Caribbean invited to participate in the 2017 Solar Car Challenge which will be held on the Texas Motor Speedway in Dallas, Texas.  This elite competition will showcase the engineering capabilities of high school students from around the United States, Canada and Europe.  Students are tasked with building a race car from scratch that is powered solely by the sun.

This project is spearheaded by the school's Physics teacher, Fr. Shazzasbazzar Turnquest, who is a trained Mechanical Engineer and holds a MSc in Energy Systems and the Environment.  The team of students are also receiving guidance from industry professionals who are providing instruction on welding, auto mechanics, electrical engineering and solar technology

Since February 2016, the team has reached out to corporate citizens who have helped with the purchase of materials needed to build the vehicle.

With less than six (6) months to go, the team is in dire need of major financial assistance to make their dream of racing on the famous Texas Motor Speedway a reality.

In addition to expenses related to completing the build and testing the vehicle; the team, who is traveling from an island off of the US mainland, needs funding to cover the costs related to:

- Purchasing a 20 ft container to ship the car to Texas
- Shipping the car to Texas
- Hauling fees (from US port to Race)
- Racing fees
- Insurances for car
- Purchasing airline tickets (and travel insurance) for team of 12 students, 5 teachers and 3 industry professionals
- Securing accommodations for team of 12 students, 5 teachers and 3 industry professionals over a 10 day period
- Securing ground transportation for team of 12 students, 5 teachers and 3 industry professionals over a 10 day period
- Securing meals for team of 12 students, 5 teachers and 3 industry professionals over a 10 day period
- Purchasing team gear (including hats and t-shirts for each member of the team for a 10 day period)

Additionally, in an effort to educate and encourage others to pursue similar educational projects focused on renewable energy, the team is taking on a bold initiative. It hopes to also raise the  funds necessary to produce a professional, high quality short documentary to be used as a tool to inspire other students in the Caribbean to take on similar projects.  They are working with Settler’s Cove Productions, who has agreed to help the team tell the story of their journey to the 2017 Solar Car Challenge.
