Hello. My name is Kristin Roman and I teach Gifted & Talented students (grades kindergarten through 5) at Atascocita Springs Elementary. My students have decided that they’d like to grow crops (vegetables, fruits, herbs, etc.) during the school year. In doing so, students could host Farmers’ Markets for the community, donate funds earned to organizations (such as The Houston Food Bank), and experience authentic learning through real-world gardening.

When they mentioned a greenhouse, my mind instantly thought of the idea as “too big” or “far-fetched.” However, now that the seed has been planted in my head, I know we can achieve this together and everyone can benefit.

Think of the responsibility students will gain. Also, we plan on collaborating with our neighborhood high school’s agricultural department for helpful tips and training throughout the year. The amount of learning will be endless.
