Green Eggs and Am was started in 2008 by 3-time World Champion Skimboarder, Paulo Prietto , and fellow skimboarder, Steve Taylor. The goal of Green Eggs and Am is to bring together the community of skimboarders and their families, as well as to be a welcoming start for the upcoming contest season. It is our hope to get all local amateur skimboarders and traveling athletes involved in a competitive yet relaxed environment. It is considered an ice breaker to the coming year.
Nearly every winner in our advanced division has gone on successfully in the professional ranks of skimboarding. Athletes such as Austin Keen and Blair Conklin are past winners, both currently seeded in the top 3 of the world. They were instrumental in making our early years a success. With the help of the Conklin family, we are also able to offer a small scholarship grant to be used towards education or skim-related expenses such as travel or equipment. The award is named for Blair Conklin’s grandfather, Barry Brief, who had a profound impact on Blair as well as the rest of the Conklin family.
In previous years, our event has flown somewhat under the radar, so to speak. While all events were insured with proper policies, we had not obtained permits for any of the locations. During last year’s West Street session, OC Lifeguards kindly asked for proper permits through Laguna Beach and to have a Certified OC Lifeguard on duty for all events.
These requests are absolutely fair and gladly obliged. However, the new expenses far exceed what we (Paulo and Steve) can afford on our own. We are asking the skimboard community and those that are financially capable to help us in putting on this great event at West Street on Sunday, April 12th. It is our goal to offer a t-shirt or hat to all participants and volunteers, trophies and prizes to finalists, food for judges/volunteers, give-a-ways at random and an epic event recap video, as we have provided for in each of the past events. These videos are available for viewing on YouTube by searching “Green Eggs and Am”.
Our goal is to reach $1011. With this amount of support, we will be able to run the event, providing everything mentioned above. Even if we don’t reach this goal, we will still run the event. We want to give back to skimboarding and its community, for all the joy it has brought us. K-Earth 101 is also Steve's favorite radio station, so we decided to add $11 onto the $1000 goal.
If the event is able to pull in $1500, we will offer free entry into the event for up to 50 competitors. Any donations received over and beyond the $1500 mark, after expenses are paid, will be put towards future years to help grow the event as well as towards the BeBrief Award, which will be awarded to the winner of the Grinches (Advanced) division.
If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact us through GoFundMe. We will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
Thank you for any support you can offer and for those that wish to offer but are unable to, please do not strain your wallet. We will make do, one way or another. We love skimboarding and we hope Green Eggs and Am will continue to be a great success for many years to come.
