The Great Glenn Way Challenge

Donation protected
Norma Rodley, Delia Gallagher, Shirley Hill, Sal Duncan, Suzanne Spalding and Anita Lo are fundraising to help with the running costs of Sanuk Day Care Center in Thailand for construction workers' children.   We are going to walk and cycle the Great Glen Way - from Fort William to Inverness, 79 miles,  and we're doing it in one day!  A sum of £2500 is enough to pay for a teacher for a year  at the Centre and this is our overall goal from this and other events.  Over £1000 has already been raised in memory of Damian Gallagher.

This charity was the one which Damian Gallagher (Delia’s brother) supported until his untimely death in Thailand, November 29th 2014.   Damian was an amazing man who was passionate about learning, both for himself and others.  He was also very much motivated by challenges and would have been very supportive of both the challenge and the charity aspect of this campaign.  Sanuk Daycare is a small charity but it does wonderful work for children who would otherwise end up on the streets and in the hands of corrupt criminal gangs.

The initial idea for the walk came about because Norma had an important birthday (hint: it’s the one between 40 and 60!) and wanted to do a challenge.   And this is a great challenge – 79 miles (127 kilometres) The Great Glen Way stretches for 117km from coast to coast across the Highlands, linking the main centres of Fort William and the regional capital of Inverness. The route follows the major natural faultline of the Great Glen which divides Scotland from coast to coast.

Sanuk Day Care Center provides the children with safety, food, education, clean drinking water, clothes and daily showers. These are the basic needs every child should be entitled to.

They rent 2 houses next to each other as they have over 80 children attending the day care center. Their overall costs per month are £3,500, this is for rent, electricity, water, food and staff wages.

This fundraising will help keep Sanuk day care center open and hopefully raise enought to pay for a teacher for a year. Without fundraising these children would be back in their labour camp running around in sewage with no hope for the future.

If you would like to know more about the charity, please watch the short documentry below:

A rare insight in to the conditions of Construction Worker's Camps in Pattaya

The children helped have no hope for the future and live in 6 foot by 6 foot tin shacks, they play in the dangerous and sewage filled labour camps. more hours per day and are earning pennies.
