Hello from Zenat in Northern Iraq!
I am excited to share with you about a new nonprofit I created to serve vulnerable women and children here in the refugee and IDP (internally displaced people) camps. I've lived here for two years serving families and have learned a lot. The vision for this organization came about when I noticed a gap in service to IDP families: while other organizations are distributing care packages and goods, the Yazidi people are in need of more comprehensive skill training, as well as psychological support. We are opening a community center that will be part of creating this Greater Change in the lives of Yazidi families. The vision of Greater Change is to educate and empower women and children to implement healthy practices, and to help them stay in Iraq and transform their societies.
Greater Change is registered in Virginia, US and the Kurdish Regional Government. Please see the graphic below to see our progress towards 501(c)3 tax exempt status. We will keep you updated!
How We Serve
We opened the Greater Change Community Center in May 2017 on the outskirts of the massive refugee camp. The Center has two classrooms, a reception area, child friendly space, a counseling room and a kitchen to use to teach healthy cooking practices.
Our initial focus is the following areas:
1. Counseling for survivors of trauma and torture.
2. Health and Nutrition classes: Basic health, hygiene and baby care classes are really needed in this area. In fact, general health classes was the number one requested class during registration.
3. English and Photography classes: The classes teach children utilizing photography as a form of therapy.
Why We Serve
We are motivated by Jesus Christ as the one who can create a greater change and transformation in our lives. His love compels us to serve and we rely on Him to lead us.
The vision of Greater Change is to educate and empower women and children to implement healthy practices, combat hopelessness and to help them stay in Iraq and transform their community. Through its activities, Greater Change will seek to help women and children experience the love of God who sent Jesus into a fallen world to reconcile the world to Himself.
