Art’s Transplant Journey

Good afternoon, thank you for taking the time to read our story.

My husband is 47 years old. We have been married for over 20 years, and he has been on dialysis for about 9 1/2 years. He has been waiting for a kidney for about nine years. Well, he finally got his new kidney. The transplant was successful and everything is looking like it’s going well according to plan. He is officially off dialysis but last week, he woke up with a quarter size lump on his abdomen. We contacted the transplant team, and he was sent for a CT scan which revealed he has fluid buildup, so they had to insert a drain to help remove the fluids. They were removing a little more than a liter of fluid a day after the first 2 days after the drain was inserted.

Although we are beyond grateful that he was able to get a new kidney, he won’t be able to work for a couple of months depending on how fast he recuperates. He was appointments scheduled every week which will change every month or so until he reaches a year post transplant when his doctor visits will be yearly. He works with children at a local elementary school and he can't wait to return to work. He misses his students very much.

Since he will be out of work, we are asking our friends and families who have been with us throughout this journey for any donations to assist us with his medical bills and medications during this time that he will be out of work. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
