Hello everyone,
My name is Riccarda Dore, and I am the granddaughter of Josephine Dore—also lovingly known as my Nonna.
Recently, her health has declined significantly, and she has been placed in hospice care. While a funeral fund has already been set up to help with general costs, her final wish is to be laid to rest at Saint John’s Cemetery. The cost for this ranges between $11,000 and $13,000. I have been able to cover part of this amount, but I am humbly asking for help to raise the remaining funds to honor her last wish.
Josephine Dore was born in New York City, in the Little Italy neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, on June 7, 1921. She was the daughter of Carmelo Taccone and Francesca Felicetta. At the age of four, her family returned to Italy and settled on the island of Ischia, in the town of Forio, where her mother was born.
As a young woman, she worked as a live-in nanny and cook for families in Naples and Rome. She later married Riccardo Dore from Sassari, Sardinia, and together they had two sons: Gennaro and Frank Dore. Sadly, her son Gennaro passed away at a young age, and her husband Riccardo died in a military hospital in Bologna due to an old war wound.
In late June of 1961, at the age of 40, Josephine returned to the United States with her surviving son, Frank. She spent many years working as a seamstress in Norwalk, Connecticut.
Josephine is survived by her son Frank, two granddaughters, and four great-grandsons. She also leaves behind a beloved sister who still resides in Forio, Ischia, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Josephine will always be remembered for her generous heart, her strength, and her deep love for family.
Any support, no matter the size, would mean the world to our family as we try to give her the resting place she wished for.
God Bless
With gratitude,
Riccarda Dore
