The family and friends of both aawok Jordan Allen and aawok Grant Gilkison have been considering creating a scholarship since Grant passed away last year. He was a hard worker who did so much for his community with environmental activism for our rivers, forests and youth events for the local kids. An uncle to many, Grant was always ready to fundraise and advocate for his people. He also did whatever he could for his family, helping many to find their career paths, and find places to live in the homelands when it is so very hard for Native people to do so. One such relative was our cousin Jordan Allen. Grant and Jordan were very close. Grant helped Jordan attend the Le Cordon Bleu culinary school and was always there when he needed support and a good laugh. Jordan himself was a community orientated man who managed to find a place in the heart of all who met him. He too fought for our rivers and supported Native community efforts He also was ready to help whoever came across his path with a smile on his face and a funny story to tell. Both men deeply loved all their little relatives. They loved Native kids and everyone knew they were good men who could be trusted to do whatever needed to be done for a child. With this in mind we are creating the Grant Gilkison and Jordan Allen Memorial Fund for Native Youth. This will be a fund through the Humboldt Area Foundation aimed at providing Native youth the funds whenever a youth event, trip, cultural activity, environmental action or emergency happens on behalf of our Native children. In this way we hope to honor these two relatives who always did so much for all of us and enable them to continue to do their good works.
