My parents have faced unimaginable health challenges over the past three years, and I'm creating this GoFundMe page to ask for your support.
In 2021, my father, Felipe, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). He was given a few weeks to live without treatment. He underwent a stem cell transplant that saved his life, only to face additional health hurdles in the subsequent 2 years - Post-Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder (PTLD) and Organizing Pneumonia. The resilience he's shown throughout these battles is truly inspiring.
In the midst of Felipe’s health challenges, his devoted wife, my mother Alma, was enduring her own struggle. She was placed on a liver transplant waiting list in 2021, finally receiving her life-saving transplant in June of this year. However, her journey took an unexpected turn when she began to suffer multi-organ failure, hypoxemia, and hypercapnea. She has been in the hospital since then, spending two weeks intubated and currently relying on a tracheostomy for breathing. She can't eat, speak, or breathe on her own.
My parents have shown incredible strength through faith, but they've also faced extreme financial hardship. My father was the sole income earner and has been unable to work for the last 3 years, relying solely on reduced social security benefits. Their financial burden has grown to encompass basic living expenses and mounting medical bills, including premiums, co-pays, and expenses not covered by insurance.
Now, Alma is about to begin an arduous journey of rehabilitation including: vent weaning, re-learning to breathe/swallow/eat/speak, regaining function of her limbs so she can ambulate on her own, and dialysis 3x/week at a long-term acute care hospital. It's a necessary step for her recovery, but it adds to the financial strain they're enduring.
As their daughter, it's heart-wrenching to see my parents endure so much and not be able to support them in more ways. I'm reaching out to our community, friends, and kind-hearted strangers to lend a helping hand. Your donation, no matter the size, will make a real difference in easing their financial burden and allowing them to focus on their health and recovery.
Your generosity can provide them with the stability they desperately need during these difficult times. My goal is that through this page, we can offer them a ray of hope in their journey toward recovery.
Please consider donating today and sharing this fundraiser with your friends and family. Help me show them that they are not alone in this battle.
Thank you from the depths of our hearts for your kindness, compassion, and support.
With love and gratitude,
Sofia, Daughter of Alma & Felipe
